Inflammation of tonsils which are situated in the throat area are called tonsilitis.

Causes of tonsils :

A common cause is Streptococcus (strep) bacteria. Other causes of tonsils are :

  • Viral infection
  • Bectricial infection
  • Adenoviruses
  • Influenza virus
  • Epstein-Barr virus
  • Parainfluenza viruses
  • Enteroviruses
  • Herpes simplex virus

Symptoms of tonsils:

  • Headaches
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing through the mouth
  • Swollen glands in the neck or jaw area
  • Fever, chills
  • Bad breath
  • Weakness
  • Body ache
  • Pain in ear and throat area

In children, symptoms can be:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • fatigue

Home remedies for tonsils :

Cold compress

Cold compress is one of the effective treatment for tonsils. Take few ice cubes and wrap these in a clean cloth. Place this cloth on affected areas every one hour for 10-15min. Repeat this process

Hot Milk with Turmeric

One glass of hot milk, add half tea spoon of termeric powder and half spoon of black pepper. Mix it well and take before you go to sleep.

Honey with water

Take a glass of luke warm water, add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 2 tea spoon of honey with some salt. Mix it well and take this mixture twice a day.


Take Rest

As described above, tonsils occurs due to viral or becterial infection and we might feel fatigue so one should take proper rest to regain strength.

Luke Warm Water

Take enough luke warm water to prevent dehydration


Gargle with warm water will help in reducing tonsils. Take a glass of luke warm water and add 1/2 tea spoon of salt in it. Liquid is ready for gargling now.

 Speak Less

Do not speak or speak very softly so that you do not get hurt.

Avoid AC, Dry Heat

Try not to sit in air conditioning and avoid dry heat as much as you can.

Green Tea

Take hot green tea which will help to boost you immunity.
